Required Textbooks:
Willard Oxtoby, Ed. World Religions · Eastern Traditions
Harold Coward, et al. Readings in Eastern Religions
Exams:
We will have a very short evaluation every other week. Evaluation day is
normally Wednesday. Those grades will together represent 40% of your
final grade. The final exam will also be 30% of your grade. Another 20%
will come from numerous short reading checks. You should expect a lot of
these (between 1 and 3 a week). A final 10% will come from a critical
review of either a web site or a book appropriate to the subject matter
of the course (note this can include novels, but please check with me in
advance). I will also reward you for class participation (but not
detract for shyness). There will be a makeup available for each of the
biweekly quizzes, but you must have a valid excuse to take it. I will
allow you to retake one failed quiz by doing the makeup -- but only if
you took the main version -- you may not make up a failed makeup. No
make-ups will be available for the reading checks, but with a valid
excuse I will not average in a 0 for that grade.
This class will expect you to be computer literate. There may be
materials 'on line' that I want you to use, and we will spend some time
early in the semester learning to use them if necessary. You will each
need an e-mail account.
The web/book site review is short (around 3 pages). We will be talking
about this more in class.
