Course Description
This course is an introduction to the use of computers
in the humanities. The focus will be upon
consideration of issues and techniques involved in
developing quality resources for use in the student's
field of study. A major project will be the creation of an
academic web site related to the student's major.
Techniques covered will include basic and advanced
HTML (for the development of humanities web pages),
graphics, multimedia and foreign character display.
There will also be a brief introduction to other markup
languages such as SGML, XML or Beta code. There will be
a programming component focusing on JavaScript, C or
Pearl (the latter two for the production of CGI programs).
used as a means of introducing the student to simple
programming concepts usefulness in
the creation of web resources. The course will also
consider methodological issues such as designing
content for effective communication, the movement
from text to multimedia, ethical/legal problems, and
the significance of computer technology in shaping
the future of the humanities disciplines.
