Although we did not follow this order in the class lectures, the World
Religions textbook locates the discussion of Shinto in the middle of its
section of Chinese religions. It comes immediately after the description of historical
Chinese religious practice, but before its discussion of Taoism and Confucianism. What
logic would lead them to do this? Show arguments both for and against their apparent
supposition that Shinto has so much in common with traditional Chinese traditions that
it should be view as a category within them, rather than as a separate religions tradition.
